Pediatric Surgery

What is pediatric surgery ?

If your child needs any medical treatment, like any parent, you would want the best for them. So, if your child needs an operation/ surgery, the best doctors for them are pediatric surgeons. Any doctor who has specialized in general surgery can operate on children, however, pediatric surgeons are those who operate on children, from as soon as they are born (neonatal) to their teenage years. Pediatric surgeons specialize in caring for the surgical needs of children. They understand their specific needs and are able to work with them to help improve their quality of life. Some newborn children have medical issues that are recognized by paediatricians (doctors who treat children), neonatologists (doctors who treat newborn babies), and general doctors. These issues are often corrected by pediatric surgeons, who, with the help of all the experts, are involved in a child’s medical health to determine if surgery is the best way to treat them.

What are the different types of paediatric surgery ? What paediatric surgery options available ?

Although some conditions are commonly treated with surgery, they may not be needed in the event of an alternate therapy. Pediatric surgeons provide surgical care for all conditions that affect children, for example, transplantation operations. They also take care of the following areas of child care:

  1. Neonatal: Newborn children may have birth defects, some of which may be life threatening, and are surgically cared for by the surgeon.
  2. Prenatal: The foetal development of your child is monitored by pediatric surgeons, along with radiologists. They use ultrasound and other technologies to detect the presence of any defects in the foetus in the womb. If they detect a birth defect, this helps them plan for the surgery of the child as soon as it is born.
  3. Trauma: Critical care situations, involving traumatic injuries such as children falling or other accidents are cared for by your pediatric surgeon. Even though they may not require surgery, the doctors are necessary to care for the children and their immediate and/ or future health.
  4. Pediatric Oncology: Pediatric surgeons are also involved in diagnosing and surgically caring for those children who have cancer.

Pediatric surgeons diagnose, treat, and manage several surgical needs of children, including:

  1. Surgery for abnormalities of the groin in childhood and adolescence (undescended testes, hernias, hydroceles and varicoceles)
  2. Surgery to repair birth defects, such as cleft lip and palate
  3. Critical injuries that require surgery (vehicular accidents, knife wounds)
  4. Diagnosis and surgical care of tumors/ cancer, such as neuroblastoma, Wilms’ tumor, rhabdomyosarcoma
  5. Transplantation operations
  6. Endoscopy
  7. Separation of conjoined twins

Who are your paediatrics care team?

If your child has any paediatric disorder, you will be meeting with a paediatrician, paediatric general surgeons, paediatric anesthesiologists, paediatric nurses, and support staff who are experts in care for premature babies, neonates, children and adolescents up to the age of 19 years. Your team may also include consultants in paediatric critical care medicine, neonatology, and several other personnel who will care for your child.
